At this very moment in laboratories around the world, scientists are hard at work developing new ways to keep us safe. Whether it's bacteria and germs or UV rays and the wind, some dangers are invisible, making the innovations made by scientists in the areas of safety and security even more impressive and important.

The 2010 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge is focused on these critical areas of everyday life. Contestants will be judged on their knowledge of science and their ability to apply it to areas of safety and security, their innovative ideas and thinking skills, and their ability to creatively communicate their innovative ideas. One student will win the coveted title of "America's Top Young Scientist."
